Rennae Stubbs backed compatriot Daria Saville a few weeks ago as the comeback player of the year and she doubled down after the award went to Tatjana Maria.

Daria Saville missed last year due to an injury, but she made a full recovery this year and moved up from outside the top 400 to inside the top 50. Unfortunately, the Australian player suffered another knee injury in Tokyo and will be sidelined for some time.

Tatjana Maria did something similar only her comeback was even more impressive because she did it at an age when tennis players start to slow down generally and she also reached a grand slam semi-final. It was at Wimbledon no less.

Despite that Stubbs took to Twitter to back Saville over Maria while giving credit to the German as well:

"Love Tatiana Maria but she played for 6 months in 2021 after her 2nd child. As much as i adore her, @Daria_gav deserved this award. She was #421 to start this yr after being out all of 2021 after another surgery & ended it at #53. Remember, she didn’t play last year at all. @WTA"
