Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari will meet for the eighth time on the WTA Tour, this time fighting for a spot in the 2024 Indian Wells Open final.
The two players had mixed fortunes in 2024 so far. The Greek player struggled tremendously this year, dropping out of the Top 10, and as a result, she also parted ways with her long-time coach, Tom Hill.
Soon after that, however, she hired Jessica Pegula's former coach, David Witt, and the partnership seems to be working really well so far, as Sakkari made it to the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 event on their debut together.
Her opponent will be Gauff, who turned 20 at the event, but more importantly, she has been playing great tennis. After losing a set in the opening round, she stayed flawless, and will want to keep that also against the Greek.
Head-to-head:
The two have played seven matches already. Early on, Sakkari clearly had a matchup advantage, winning four of the first five matches, and wining 9 of 11 sets played, with the American's only win coming on the clay courts.
However, they met two more times after that first five matches, and those are the two most recent matches, which were played late in 2023, when Gauff started playing tennis that sent her to global stardom, when she won the 2023 US Open.
The American won both of those matches in straight sets, and dominantly, 6-2, 6-3, and 6-2, 6-4.

Prediction:
Sakkari had success against the American before, and with Pegula's former coach, who knows Gauff really well as she's playing doubles with the fellow American, Sakkari may find some success against the 20-year-old.
Still, Gauff should have enough in this match to win, even if it should be a three-set battle.
