Belinda Bencic has been utterly brilliant for the past week, securing Switzerland’s spot in the final of the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
Bencic, at her peak, is one of the most capable tennis players on the WTA Tour. She showed what she could do at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when she won the gold medal out of nowhere.
Nobody saw it coming, but she played the best tennis and deservedly walked away with the gold medal. Something similar is happening this week as Bencic has been on fire so far at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
She’s not only playing singles but also squeezed in a doubles match, which she won as well. In total, Bencic has so far won three singles matches and one doubles match. With that 4-0 record, Bencic is leading Switzerland forward, and she secured the final for her country with her most recent win.
She did double duty in the first tie, playing singles and doubles against Italy and winning both of those matches. She followed that up by beating Leylah Fernandez of Canada in two sets as well.
Then she followed it up with this final victory, which was over Karolina Pliskova, 6-2, 7-6(6). That win pushed Switzerland into the final of the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup FInals, in which they will play against Australia.
In the first semifinal tie, Australia and the United Kingdom fought hard for the final spot. Singles matches ended without a clear winner as Storm Sanders defeated Heather Watson, and Harriet Dart leveled the score by stunning Ajla Tomljanovic.
In doubles, Storm Sanders teamed up with veteran Samantha Stosur to beat Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls and secure a spot in the final for Australia.
With Bencic firing on all cylinders, there is a very good chance that Switzerland might be able to go all the way and beat even Australia. It’s not just about Bencic, though, as Viktorija Golubic has been playing really well too.
The only reason why Bencic didn’t have to do double duty against the Czech Republic was because Golubic was able to beat Karolina Muchova.
That was a major upset, but it raises the chances of Switzerland in the final, especially if Bencic keeps doing what she’s been doing so far this week, and that’s very likely judging by how her form persistent through a couple of matches.
