Amanda Anisimova signed up to play at this week's WTA 125K tournament in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and her name was also included in the draw.

Anisimova had been training there and was scheduled to play Serbia's Natalija Kostic in the first round, but ended up giving a walkover and withdrawing from the tournament. Later on, the American shared an update on Instagram on her surprise decision.

She was expected to be one of the big names at the low-key WTA 125K tournament on Mexico's Pacific coast but revealed that she strained a muscle while training and was disappointed to miss match play. Anisimova hopes she can make it up to those who were looking forward to watching her in action next year.

"Hey eyeryone, unfortunately I strained a muscle while traininig in Mexico : (I am sad to miss it, but I hope to be there next year. Time to rehab it and get back on track. See you at IW."

The 22-year-old went on to state that she would play in Indian Wells, a combined ATP and WTA 1000 tournament taking place in California in early March. Because she is outside the world's Top 200, she can only enter into the WTA main draw with a special ranking.

Anisimpova played just 11 matches in 2023 and shut down her season prematurely at the end of April because of severe burnout and mental health struggles. After taking an indefinite break from tennis, she rejoined the tour at the start of 2024.

She has played six matches so far, impressing during her run to the fourth round of the Australian Open. Anisimova scored wins over Liudmila Samosnova, Nadia Podoroska, and Paula Badosa before losing to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.

Her current injury might just be a precaution given the busy stretch coming up, and she has already been frequenting the gym back home, building up for Indian Wells.
