'Almost Couldn't Breathe': Wimbledon Champion Vondrousova On Nerves In Final

After coming up short a few years ago in the Roland Garros final, Marketa Vondrousova finally became a Grand Slam champion at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.

It's been a fabulous two weeks in London for Vondrousova who was a surprise finalist at the event. Ranked 42nd on the WTA Tour, the Czech player didn't expect to have a deep run and neither did anybody else. Still, she advanced to the final fairly comfortably beating some amazing players along the way.

In the final, Vondrousova faced a player against whom she played five times before that Wimbledon final and twice in 2023 alone. Both of those matches were on hard courts and Vondrousova won both matches indicating a clear matchup advantage.

Well, it worked out well once more for her as she comfortably won in the final, needing only two sets. After a shaky start, Vondrousova found her best level to cruise and win her maiden Grand Slam trophy. Speaking after the match, Vondrousva summarised her thoughts and revealed that she was so nervous that she almost couldn't breathe.

I mean, relief. 'Cause when I was 40-Love up, I almost couldn't breathe. It's just like everything is on you. Yeah, I mean, I'm just very happy that I stayed in my head and I just kept it together.

It was really tough in some moments. I think it was just a great match. We had some great rallies. She's amazing player. She's amazing person. That was the tough part also. We know each other very well. I'm just very happy that I kept fighting in the important moments.

It's a stunning win in many ways as she was the second lowest-ranked Wimbledon finalist ever after Serena Williams, and unlike the legend, she actually won that year. The win will also catapult her in the WTA Rankings as she's going to be ranked 10th in the world for the first time in her career.
