Mirra Andreeva won't make it to her maiden WTA semifinals at the 2024 Brisbane International, as she lost in her quarterfinal match.
In a sense, the quarterfinal match between two teenagers at the 2024 Brisbane International was historic. It was the first such a match at a WTA 500 tournament or higher since 2009, and it showed us what the history of the sport may look like.
The 16-year-old Russian was dominant throughout the tournament, but not this time. Linda Noskova just proved to be too strong, as three years older Czech has a bit more experience than her opponent.
The opening set of the match was a real rollercoaster. First, Andreeva went into a one-break lead, but she lost it immediately in the following game to make it 1-1.
Soon after that, the young Russian had a break point to go into a 3-2 lead, but she didn't use her chance, and Noskova immediately responded with a break of her own, leading 4-2 in the opener.
That started a sequence when players broke each other's serves, as Andreeva immediately responded and made it 4-3 and later 5-4. For a moment, it seemed that the first set would go into the tie-break, but that did not happen.
Noskova stepped up her level once again, adding another break to win the first set 7-5. The first set showed also the importance of converting break points, as Andreeva used only three of her 10 chances, while her Czech opponent was successful on four out of five occasions.
In the second set, Noskova massively improved on her serve, even hitting five aces, so this time around, she needed fewer breaks to win the set, despite starting with a loss of serve.
But the Czech youngster immediately broke back, and Andreeva couldn't find a response for the remainder of the set as Noskova won the match 7-5, 6-3 to set a up a semifinal clash with Elena Rybakina.
