Lorenzo Musetti's final loss at the
Chengdu Open demonstrated how cruel tennis can be, and the Italian could not contain his emotions afterward.
Musetti's progress since the start of 2024 has been outstanding. Last season, he reached a maiden Wimbledon final and progressed to finals at the Queen's Club Championships, Croatia Open in Umag, and the Chengdu Open.
2025 has been an even better season for Musetti, especially on clay. The Italian was runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Monte-Carlo Masters and also reached the semifinals at the Madrid Open, Italian Open, and French Open.
However, Musetti's record in finals has been the one constant source of disappointment. He lost all four since 2024, which began before he played against Alejandro Tabilo for the Chengdu title. Although Tabilo is a very good player, the world No. 9 was the favorite.
Unfortunately for Musetti, he suffered his toughest loss yet in a final. After recovering from dropping the opening set, the 23-year-old held two championship points on Tabilo's serve, but could not convert either.
Musetti looked to be on the verge of winning his third career title once again when he led 4-1, but Tabilo dramatically won six of the last seven points to triumph, stunning the crowd who gathered for the final.
Understandably, Musetti found losing a fifth consecutive final overwhelming. That was demonstrated by him bursting into tears when he sat down immediately after letting the final slip through his fingers.
Musetti's emotional moment can be viewed in the video below. He had his face buried in a towel so fans could not see the tears streaming down his face, but the towel could not hide the fact that he was crying underneath it.
The Italian's breaking his streak in finals feels inevitable. Musetti is too good a player not to win more titles in the future, especially at
ATP 250, but this loss could sting for a while.
Musetti needs to recover quickly for the China Open
Rather than withdraw from the 2025 China Open in Beijing to gather his thoughts after such a heartbreaking loss, Musetti seems determined to play in the Chinese capital and build on the momentum of reaching another final.
The Italian has been handed a very difficult draw against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who is the best server in tennis and can frustrate fluid players like Musetti, who like entertaining the crowd with their level.
However, Musetti will take significant encouragement from his record against the huge-serving Frenchman. He has won their three previous meetings and has only dropped two of the ten sets they have played.
Jannik Sinner will be the favorite for the title. His chances have been improved further by
Carlos Alcaraz choosing to play at the 2025 Japan Open in Tokyo instead after competing in Beijing the previous few years.
Alcaraz outlasted Sinner in last year's final in Beijing, triumphing in a deciding set tiebreak. They have already played in three Grand Slam finals this year, including one of the greatest in tennis history at the 2025 French Open.
