Coco Gauff is a Christian, and she regularly mentions her faith, thanking God for her success. She also did that after the 2025 Madrid Open final.
Gauff is one of the most outspoken players on the WTA Tour when it comes to speaking about important topics. The 21-year-old American is also a Christian, and she loves to promote her faith, often mentioning it as a partial reason for her success.
After weeks of struggles, Gauff finally made it to a final, competing for a title at the WTA 1000 event against Aryna Sabalenka. Both had a great win, and Gauff's run even included a win over the defending champion, Iga Swiatek.
In the final, however, Sabalenka proved to be the better player. The WTA World No. 1 won the match 6-3, 7-6(3), lifting her third title after triumphing in Brisbane at the start of the season, and in Miami recently.
After the final, both players addressed the crowd in the Spanish capital. Starting her speech, Gauff couldn't forget her faith, thanking Jesus Christ for her success.
"First, I'd like to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ to be here, and the opportunity to play in the final."
Of course, immediately after, Gauff also mentioned her opponent. Sabalenka reached the final in the last four tournaments that she played, winning two titles. After losing in the Indian Wells Open final, the Belarusian won in Miami. Then, she lost in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix final, but won in Madrid.
For Gauff, who aspires to once reach the World No. 1 rank like Sabalenka, these results are certainly motivating, which is also why the American mentioned Sabalenka's success after the final.
"Then, I'd like to congratulate Aryna on an incredible tournament. You’re always tough to face. Congrats to your team. The last... Well, you’re always doing well, but the last four straight finals, I think. Congratulations on all the success you’ve been having."
After congratulating her opponent, Gauff also thanked her team. Although she was disappointed to lose the final, the 2023 US Open champion knew that reaching the final in Madrid was a significant improvement compared to some of her results in recent months.
"I'd like to thank my team. I know, we've all been working incredibly hard, but I definitely think this is a step in the right direction. So, hopefully we can go for more, and then win the bigger trophy."
Gauff will now want to follow up on her success from Madrid also in Rome. She, like the rest of the Tour, will compete at the Italian Open, which is the last WTA 1000 tournament before the start of Roland Garros.
