Aneke Rune, Holger Rune's mother, angrily clarified that comments allegedly from her about Jannik Sinner on social media are fake and were spread maliciously.
Sinner's ongoing suspension until May 4th after settling his high-profile case with the World Anti-Doping Agency was controversial. The story also allows those with bad intentions to try to create distortion and chaos.
While many players, such as Nick Kyrgios, have openly criticized Sinner and how his case was handled, others have either hesitated to weigh in on such a divisive subject or have defended the ATP world No. 1.
A troll decided to generate attention by inventing quotes from Aneke Rune that are not real. The fake quotes questioned the timing of Sinner's case settlement and claimed that Holger was robbed of the 2025 Australian Open title by the settlement coming after the season's opening Grand Slam.
"How convenient that the ban was timed perfectly between two Grand Slams. There was definitely some settlement between the player's team and WADA. I feel my son Holger was robbed of AO this year."
Unfortunately, many believed the quotes were accurate and they went viral on social media. The troll responsible clearly caused the stir they wanted when making the original post containing the fake quotes.
Aneke's response to the false quotes was brief, but it still made her feelings entirely clear. She asked social media users to stop spreading untrue information in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
"Stop spreading fake information constantly!"
What makes the troll's fake quotes particularly galling is that Aneke's actual comments about Sinner's case settlement and suspension a few weeks ago were quite defensive and sympathetic to the three-time Grand Slam champion.
Aneke, while acknowledging that she is not a doping expert, said she thought his three-month suspension was too long and also expressed concern about players not living their lives out of fear of accidentally testing positive for a banned substance.
While not a robust defense of Sinner, those comments are still among the most supportive of him since his case settlement with WADA became publicly known a few weeks after the 2025 Australian Open.
That probably made Aneke Rune even more shocked by the fake comments that circulated. Having her words taken out of context would be one thing, but the troll decided to go further and invent something entirely fictional.
Sinner's high-profile saga is back in the news after his former fitness coach, Umberto Ferrara, made some startling admissions during an interview. Ferrara said he has used trofodermin, a product containing clostebol, for years for a chronic illness.
The world No. 1's positive tests for clostebol, a banned substance for tennis players, came after Giacomo Naldi, his ex-physiotherapist, used Ferrara's trofodermin for a cut finger and had the substance on his fingers when giving Sinner massages.
Ferrara claimed that he told Naldi to use the trofodermin in his private bathroom and to keep it away from Sinner. However, questions will be asked about Ferrara using the product for years and whether Sinner knew about it.
