Nick Kyrgios made a surprising statement about his planned comeback, which should happen in the upcoming weeks.
It's been some time since Kyrgios regularly competed on the ATP Tour. The 2022 season was the best season of his tennis career, but it was also the last proper season of the Australian's career.
The Australian Open doubles champion injured himself at the end of the season, and he sustained yet another injury the following year. This year, Kyrgios appeared on the tennis courts for the first time since 2023, returning at the Brisbane International.
Kyrgios' first match was a doubles match alongside Novak Djokovic, which the duo won. The Australian then lost his singles match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Kyrgios then lost two more matches, one against Jacob Fearnley at the Australian Open and the other against Botic van de Zandschulp in Indian Wells. He struggled with an injury during both matches, even retiring against Van de Zandschulp.
But the Wimbledon champion finally won his first match of the season against Mackenzie McDonald in Miami, before losing to Karen Khachanov. Since then, Kyrgios has been away from the tennis courts.
The clay-court part of the season is not the favorite part of the year for Kyrgios. He has missed the Madrid Open and the Italian Open every time since last playing in 2020, and the Australian player has yet to play at Roland Garros since 2017.
Shockingly, it seems that Roland Garros might be the place where Kyrgios could return to the tennis courts. After celebrating his 30th birthday recently, he posted an update on Instagram, saying he plans to "head to Paris in about three weeks."
"Hey guys, a couple of days after my birthday now. Just getting into training, and getting ready to head to Paris in about three weeks. I just want to say I appreciate all the birthday messages, it's almost been impossible to get back to every single one of you, but I really appreciate the love from all my fans, family, and friends."
Kyrgios' update is shocking for two reasons. First of all, no one would expect him to make a comeback at the event that he last played in 2017. It's not a secret that the 30-year-old doesn't like clay courts.
But even more surprising is the fact that Kyrgios currently doesn't appear on the men's Roland Garros entry list. He didn't use his protected ranking to enter, meaning the only chance for him to make it to the event is through a wild card from the tournament organizers.
Another chance is that Kyrgios might opt to play only in the doubles tournament at the clay-court Grand Slam. After all, he is a major champion in doubles.
The French Open starts on May 25th, and unless Kyrgios experiences another setback on his journey, it seems that the tournament might be played with the Australian star in the draw.
