Lorenzo Musetti had a great start to the 2026 season, but it is slowly turning into a disaster, as an injury will keep him out of play for at least a few more weeks.
Musetti started the new season by reaching the Hong Kong Open final. Only Alexander Bublik beat the Italian at the
ATP 250 event in Hong Kong, and a final participation was certainly a good start to the 2026 season for Musetti.
He was able to carry that form to the Australian Open, recording impressive wins over Lorenzo Sonego, Tomas Machac, and Taylor Fritz, who are all incredibly dangerous opponents. Not just that. In the quarter-finals, Musetti had a 2-0 lead over Novak Djokovic.
The 23-year-old was playing some sensational tennis and was on his way to eliminate the 10-time champion. Despite being 2-0 up, Musetti couldn't continue because of a right leg issue, which is why he retired from the match, later explaining how painful it was for him to make that decision.
"Honestly, I never imagined the feeling of leading two sets to zero against Novak and playing like that, having the lead of the match like that and being forced to retire. It's something that, of course, I will never imagine. Of course, it's really painful."
After the Australian Open, Musetti planned to compete at the Golden Swing, more specifically at the
Argentina Open in Buenos Aires, which runs from February 9th to 15th and the
Rio Open, which runs from February 16th to 22nd.
However, he won't be able to compete at these events, as he didn't have enough time to recover from the injury. He announced his withdrawal from these events through a post on his social media accounts.
"After the results of my medical examinations and tests, my team and I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the upcoming tournaments in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. My focus right now is on my rehabilitation so I can return to the court. Thank you to everyone for their support and hope to see you soon."
Musetti also recorded a video for the
Argentina Open accounts, in which he repeated what he wrote in his own statement. His withdrawal is a huge hit for the tournament organizers in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, as he was the only Top 15 player signed up for these events.
Musetti will now put all his efforts towards recovery. Although he has improved on the hard courts in recent seasons, his best results have come on the clay courts, which is why he will want to be healthy for that part of the season.
Before that, he will also want to travel to the United States for the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open. At the moment, however, it's not possible to assess the timeline of his recovery.
