Jessica Pegula provided an insight into the online abuse players receive by sharing horrible messages from those who bet on the sport.
Pegula had a decent run to the fourth round at this year's Roland Garros. That was a good achievement after struggling throughout the rest of the clay-court swing with results and performances.
The WTA world No. 3 lost to the home favorite Lois Boisson, who had an incredible run to the semifinal as a wild card ranked outside the Top 300 before falling to Pegula's former doubles partner Coco Gauff.
Pegula's considerably higher ranking and longer list of accomplishments made her the favorite to beat Boisson. Therefore, many people who placed bets on the contest lost money after the Frenchwoman caused an upset.
Last year's US Open runner-up posted an Instagram story with a selection of the despicable messages she received. Some of them ridiculed Pegula's tennis ability, including one that mentioned her father being a billionaire.
"Just quit playing tennis and enjoy your father's money. You are literally the most useless Top 10 player ever!"
Sadly, some of the abuse was much worse. A few days before the 2025 French Open began, Pegula shared the sad news that her beloved dog Tucker had passed away after several years of being a family member.
Shockingly, many of the people abusing Pegula chose to do it under the post she made about Tucker. One account mentioned the dog's name when mocking the American for supposedly hitting the ball waywardly.
"Tucker wants to know why you can't hit the ball straight."
An even more despicable message under the same post came from someone who accused her of losing to Boisson on purpose.
"You sold this match on purpose. Can't wait until karma spends the block back on you. Hopefully, your firstborn child will be a stillbirth."
Other comments included Pegula being called a waste of oxygen and a picture being posted with "you die" written on it. The three-time WTA 1000 champion outlined in the Instagram story how crazy the betters who abuse players are.
"These betters are insane and delusional, and I don't allow DMs and try to remember when to shut my comments off during tournament weeks, but they always find a way to my timeline. This stuff has never really bothered me much, but does any sport deal with this to our level? I'd love to know because it seems to be predominantly tennis? It's so disturbing."
"Every person on tour deals with it. It's so bad. Those are just really small snippets. I get told my family should get cancer and die from people on here on a regular basis. Absolutely crazy."
Pegula is the latest to speak about this issue. Caroline Garcia wrote an emotional post last year about the abuse players receive, and Ons Jabeur has also outlined how horrible betters can be on social media.
Mirra Andreeva admitted she found the atmosphere in her Roland Garros quarterfinal loss to Lois Boisson challenging to manage, but thankfully, she did not receive the type of abuse dished out by pathetic betters.
