Rumors have circulated for weeks about whether
Darren Cahill will stay with
Jannik Sinner in 2026, and the coach has now clarified what the future holds.
Earlier this season, Sinner revealed that Cahill planned to retire from coaching at the end of 2025 to spend more time with his family. The Italian did not hide his disappointment at the news because of how important he has been to him.
Cahill has been Sinner's co-coach alongside Simone Vagnozzi since July 2022. The Australian, who helped Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, and Simona Halep to win Grand Slam titles before joining Sinner, is broadly considered one of the world's best coaches.
However, the 24-year-old offered hope of him staying after
winning the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, revealing that the pair had made a bet that he could decide Cahill's future if he secured the title in London.
Cahill had remained non-committal about his future despite the bet being known. That ended when he spoke to the media ahead of the 2025
ATP Finals, which began on Sunday, and is being held on home soil again for Sinner in Turin.
The four-time Grand Slam champion's co-coach has confirmed that whether he remains will be decided by Sinner. That means Cahill is almost sure to stay on the team, since Sinner has openly said he doesn't want him to leave.
"My future is in Jannik's hands. I'm a man of my word; we made a little bet before the Wimbledon final. He will decide what I do next year. This isn't a question for me, but for him. If he wants me to stay, I'll stay."
Interestingly, Cahill followed those words by saying he believes Sinner should consider hiring someone new to offer a fresh perspective on his game, but reiterated he would stay if the ATP world No. 1 does not want that yet.
"Jannik is an incredible young man to work with. My role in the team is unique, I think they should consider a new voice and perhaps a change would be appropriate. But if he's not ready, no problem. It will still be his decision : when we talk at the end of the year, I want him to decide what's best for him. If he wants to make a change, he will be okay with his choice."
Jannik Sinner became irritated with his team at the Paris Masters
Jannik Sinner is usually one of the least expressive players in the world. He typically stays calm while ruthlessly defeating almost every opponent.
His recent problem against Carlos Alcaraz at professional events is the one exception.
The Italian's
annoyance with his team at the 2025 Paris Masters was a rare flash of anger. After he broke serve against Ben Shelton, no team members rose to their feet in celebration while Sinner walked back to his chair.
After the changeover, an irritated Sinner criticized them for "fu***ng sitting" after he broke serve. It was just a momentary frustration, and does not indicate a breakdown in relations between him and co-coaches Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi.
