Jannik Sinner had a health scare in his semi-final match at the 2025
US Open, and his coach spoke about it ahead of the Italian's final meeting.
Currently, it seems that only injuries can stop Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz from meeting in every final. They played the final at the Italian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, Cincinnati Open, and now also the US Open.
However, it seems that an injury or some kind of physical setback might influence another final.
Sinner retired from the Cincinnati Open final after just 20 minutes, and now, ahead of the US Open final, there are question marks surrounding his physical condition as well.
In his semi-final match against Felix Auger-Aliassime, the top seed had a problem with his abdomen, even requiring an off-court medical timeout. That happened after the second set, which he lost. Ultimately, Sinner won the match in four sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Despite the win, Sinner's health was the main concern after the match, which is why his coach, Simone Vagnozzi, was asked about it in an interview with
UbiTennis. Vagnozzi refused to show any signs of concern, saying that after the treatment, Sinner seemed fine.
"He just had a little abdominal discomfort at one point, but after treatment with the physiotherapist, it went away, so I don't think it's anything serious. When he came back from treatment, in the first few games, he wasn't sure how he was doing and wasn't pushing very hard. Then he started to push, and his serve improved, so I think he'll be pretty comfortable for Sunday."
"It will still be a very tough match, as always. Carlos will definitely try to do something different than in the Wimbledon final, so we need to prepare. Tomorrow, it will be important to write down some tactical ideas. Then we need to go play, enjoy it, go out on court with the confidence of having played a great tournament, push hard, and see how it goes."
What Jannik Sinner had to say about his injury scare
Immediately after his win over Auger-Aliassime, Sinner was asked about the moment as well. He commented on it during his on-court interview, but as always, the Italian's words didn't cause any panic.
Quite the opposite. Sinner stated that he felt well and that he didn't want to make any excuses ahead of the final on Sunday.
"Nothing too bad. I served a bit faster again. It’s nothing serious. I’m very happy. There are no excuses. Sunday is a very special day. Amazing final again. Let’s see what’s coming."
Whether the
ATP World No. 1 player takes a medical timeout during the final could determine if he's fully recovered against Alcaraz or not. For now, he and his team remain confident.
