Team Italy's hopes of winning another Davis Cup title were severely weakened when Jannik Sinner announced his withdrawal from next month's finals. He has explained that decision.
Sinner was the team's most pivotal figure during its 2023 and 2024 triumphs. The first of those titles included him saving match points before winning against Novak Djokovic just a few days after the 24-time Grand Slam champion had beaten him at the 2023 ATP Finals.
This year's Australian Open and Wimbledon champion proved their talisman again almost 12 months ago. If the most dominant hard-court player since the start of 2024 had made himself available, Team Italy would have been the favorite again.
Instead, Sinner announced at the 2025 Vienna Open that he and his team have decided to skip the Davis Cup Finals, scheduled from November 18th to 23rd, to prioritize being ready for the 2026 Australian Open.
"I’ve won the Davis Cup twice. My team and I made this decision because the end of the season is very long, and I need an extra week off to start training earlier. The goal is to be in top shape for Australia. Over the last two years, I haven’t been at my best due to a lack of time, so we decided this was the right move."
Sinner's announcement drew a mixed reaction. Some understood that top players care most about Grand Slams and did not think it was unreasonable for the 24-year-old to take an extra week in pursuit of a third consecutive Australian Open title.
The ATP world No. 2's detractors pointed out that he found time to play at last week's 2025 Six Kings Slam, where he won $6,000,000 for beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Others thought one extra week representing his country would not impact his Australian Open hopes.
Sinner's mentioning that he has already won the Davis Cup twice makes it sound like that success means his motivation is less, and the worldwide stat does not feel like he owes his teammates or the Italian Federation anything.
The unwavering support he received from Italian players and the Federation during his high-profile doping case raises a question about whether it should have made him more committed to the Davis Cup.
Alcaraz was named in Team Spain's lineup. The six-time Grand Slam winner will hope for more success than last year, when the Spaniards were eliminated by the Netherlands in Rafael Nadal's final professional appearance.

Sinner will try to finish the season strongly

After the 2025 Vienna Open, Sinner is scheduled to appear at next week's 2025 Paris Masters. Rumors had recently circulated about him skipping the final Masters 1000 tournament on the calendar.
Currently, Sinner is on the Paris Masters entry list. That does not guarantee his involvement since late withdrawals among top players are not uncommon, but the organizers will be hopeful that he does compete.
Sinner's season will end with his title defense at the 2024 ATP Finals. That triumph on home soil in Turin almost a year ago was memorable.
