Jannik Sinner will also play during the second week of the 2025 Australian Open after overcoming Marcos Giron without too many issues.

The ATP World No. 1 started the new season on a 14-match winning streak, which included his triumphs at the Shanghai Masters, ATP Finals, and Davis Cup Finals.

He was one of the three top players who didn't play any warm-up events before the start of the Australian Open. Instead, Sinner chose to play exhibition matches in Melbourne.

That approach seems to be working well for Sinner, as he has now added his third win this year and tenth consecutive Australian Open win overall, as he won the title last year.

First, he overcame Nicolas Jarry, then he beat Tristan Schoolkate after losing a set, and now, he added another important win, this time against American Marcos Giron.

Giron was coming into the match after two hard-fought wins. He first had to overcome Yannick Hanfmann in four sets before beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry in five sets.

Both players have already met before. Their first and only meeting happened at the 2023 Shanghai Masters, with Sinner winning 7-6(7), 6-2. Back then, he had to fight for the first set. This time, he wanted to avoid doing that.

He ensured that by breaking in Giron's first service game, which was essential to establish early dominance in the match. From there, the 23-year-old Italian didn't face any issues in the opening set. Almost.

When it came to serving out the set, Giron found some inspired level, as he had his first break point of the match. Still, he couldn't use his chance, and Sinner won the first set 6-3.

The second set was very similar in the sense that Giron once again couldn't use his chances. Sinner broke first to lead 3-2, but the American player had a chance to immediately break back, having one break point.

Although the World No. 46 didn't use that chance, he got to another half-chance, leading 30-0 when Sinner served for the set. Again, the Italian player stayed too solid, winning the second set 6-4.

The third set was probably the most dramatic, even though the scoreline might not suggest it. In each of the first five games, players had a chance to break.

Sinner started by breaking, but Giron then couldn't use three consecutive break points after leading 40-0 on his opponent's serve.

But the top seed then also didn't use one chance, and Giron converted his seventh break point of the match to break back and level the score of the set at 2-2.

Unfortunately for him, that was the last game he won in the match, as Sinner won all the remaining games to win the match 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. In the fourth round, he will await the winner of the match between Holger Rune and Miomir Kecmanovic.
