Carlos Alcaraz plans to get a tattoo if he secures the Australian Open title, and he got specific about what it would be in an-court interview at the tournament.
Alcaraz has tattoos to mark winning the other three Grand Slams. After obtaining a maiden major title at the 2022 US Open, the Spaniard got the date of the final and "Cabeza, Corazon, y Cojones," which translates to "head, heart, and balls." It was a phrase his grandfather used to use.
His first Wimbledon title in 2023 saw him get a strawberry, in reference to the popular snack of strawberries and scream used at the grass-court Grand Slam. Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in an epic final that year.
The 21-year-old won his first French Open by beating Alexander Zverev in five sets in last year's final. Alcaraz got a tattoo of Paris's iconic Eiffel Tower to celebrate the third Grand Slam of his already incredible career.
If he wins this year's Australian Open, Alcaraz will become the youngest man to achieve the Calendar Grand Slam. Doing so would also allow him to add another tattoo in recognition of claiming the major title he is missing.
In an interview after beating Nuno Borges in the Australian Open third round, Alcaraz was asked what tattoo he would receive for going all the way to the title in Melbourne. The former ATP world No. 1 answered with an animal that is special to the country.
"It's a kangaroo, that's for sure. It's going to be a kangaroo, that's my idea. The only thing missing for me is to lift the trophy here, but the plan is already taken."
The crowd loved Alcaraz's plan and cheered loudly when he revealed it. His fourth tattoo to celebrate winning the Australian Open and the Calendar Grand Slam would receive much attention from fans worldwide. The first three tattoos were widely shared by fans online.
Alcaraz still has a long way to go to achieve that goal. The four-time Grand Slam champion will face fellow young star Jack Draper in the next round in what promises to be a blockbuster. It could be one of the best matches of the tournament.
Draper defeated Alcaraz on home soil at the Cinch Championships last season. The Spaniard's two Wimbledon titles show how impressive that achievement from the Briton was, and Alcaraz will not take him lightly.
Novak Djokovic also progressed to the fourth round after overcoming confrontations with the crowd to defeat Tomas Machac. The ten-time Australian Open champion's next match is against Jiri Lehecka, who can be dangerous when is playing at his best.
If Alcaraz and Djokovic win their fourth-round matches, they will meet in a heavyweight quarterfinal clash. The pair played a practice set before the tournament began, which the Serbian won 7-5 after serving better in the critical moments.
Alcaraz and Djokovic have contested some of the best matches of the past few years. They could do so again if they meet in the quarterfinal, but both men will focus on ensuring no slip-ups in the fourth round.
