Jannik Sinner didn't start well in his second-round match at the 2025 Australian Open, but he ended in style, dominating as he usually does.
After beating Nicolas Jarry, the World No. 1 player took on home wild card Tristan Schoolkate. The Australian is ranked 173rd on the ATP Tour, but in the first round, he managed to outplay Taro Daniel. That was an upset, and he wanted to cause another one in the second round.
But beating Sinner wouldn't be just an upset, it would have been an absolute shock. Still, the 23-year-old Australian looked like a man on a mission early on in this match.
In the first set, Schoolkate avoided facing any break points, which was incredibly impressive from the Australian, considering he had to go through a deuce in two of his service games.
But Shoolkate wasn't just serving well. Leading 5-4, the Australian player created not one, not two, but three consecutive break point chances. Ultimately, he needed just one, shockingly winning the first set against Sinner.
In the second set, Schoolkate was able to keep up, and despite going through multiple deuces in multiple games, he once again avoided facing break points. That was until 3-3, when he didn't play a good game, committing an unforced error from his first shot three times in a row.
That gave Sinner three chances to break, and similarly to his opponent in the first set, the World No. 1 needed only one, breaking to lead 4-3. With his good serving, the Italian player then controlled the remainder of the second set to win it 6-4 and level the score in the match.
From there, Sinner completely took over the proceedings. He was dominant in the third set of the match. He broke Schoolkate's serve in three out of the Australian's four service games.
On top of that, Sinner lost only four games on his serve, and thanks to that, he was able to easily win the third set 6-1. Schoolkate's chances of causing an upset kept decreasing, and they likely hit zero at the start of the fourth set.
Sinner started with a break of serve, and even though his opponent then saved six break points at 3-0 for the Italian, since he couldn't break back, Sinner controlled the remainder of the fourth set.
Sinner won the fourth set and the match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 to reach the third round of the 2025 Australian Open. In the next round, he will face yet another challenge.
Marcos Giron won both of his matches in Melbourne, and the American will certainly fancy his chances against the top seed. Should Sinner win his third-round match, he could play against Holger Rune in the fourth round of the tournament.
