Iga Swiatek did not appreciate consistently receiving advice from coach Wim Fissette in her loss at the 2025
Miami Open and explained why afterward.
2022 Miami champion Swiatek faced the wild card Alexandra Eala in the quarterfinal. She was a considerable favorite against the world No. 140, but the Filipina defeated Madison Keys and Jelena Ostapenko in the previous rounds.
Eala left another Grand Slam champion stunned by beating Swiatek 6-2,7-5. She broke the Pole's serve an incredible eight times throughout the match to seal a win that even left her shocked.
Swiatek was out of sorts throughout the contest. The four-time French Open winner's best spell came in the first half of the second set, allowing her to take a 4-2 lead. However, she was still not near her best, and that level got worse, enabling Eala to recover.
Fissette became concerned throughout the match and tried to give her advice, including asking his player to move more actively on her feet and use more pace on serve to disrupt Eala's formidable return.
However, Swiatek eventually grew tired of her coach's words. After one of his attempts to help the former
WTA world No. 1, she turned to him and shouted, "I'm trying!", feeling her efforts were not being appreciated enough.
In an interview with Canal+ after the match, Swiatek admitted she does not like members of her team talking a lot while she is trying to focus on the court and thinks the situation will require discussion behind the scenes.
"I don't like to get point-by-point advice from the box - we have to analyze this situation."
Swiatek and Fissette have worked together for over five months. He replaced Tomasz Wiktorowski, who helped her win four of her five Grand Slams, meaning there was widespread astonishment when the pair parted ways.
Although Wiktorowski had a significant impact on Swiatek's game through their work together off the court, the Polish coach rarely spoke during matches. He knew Swiatek did not like being talked at a lot when trying to focus.
Fissette has coached many other players, including Naomi Osaka, Kim Clijsters, and Angelique Kerber. He regularly offered advice during his spells with those women, presenting a different style to Wiktorowski.
It might be slightly concerning that, after five months, he and Swiatek are not on the same wavelength about how much to communicate during matches, and this is not the first moment that indicates some friction in their relationship.
After Swiatek lost to Mirra Andreeva at the 2025 Dubai Championships,
footage emerged of the 23-year-old ignoring her Belgian coach when he attempted to give her a high five. She simply kept on walking past him.
Swiatek also became annoyed with Fissette when he tried to give advice
during another defeat to Andreeva at the 2025 Indian Wells Open. When Fissette suggested she hit her shots with more shape, the world No. 2 immediately turned around and berated him.
Observing where Swiatek and Fissette's relationship goes from here will be fascinating after these recent incidents.
