Emma Raducanu left her heart on the court during her defeat at the 2025 Miami Open, but ultimately, it wasn't enough to reach the semi-finals.
Raducanu took on the second-highest-ranked player left in the Miami Open draw in the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 tournament. After the losses of Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek, the fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula was the second-highest-ranked player standing.
The two met twice before their meeting in Miami, with each player previously recording one win. This time, there were very small margins, with both players getting close to a win.
Pegula won the first set 6-4, but Raducanu sent the match into a decider after winning the second set in a tie-break 7-3. But ultimately, Pegula won the match 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2, securing a spot in the semi-finals.
The match lasted nearly 140 minutes, and it was a proper fight, with both players giving it their all. At one point during the second set, Raducanu began feeling unwell, which is why she also called for a doctor.
Ultimately, she was able to continue playing, but it was clear that she wasn't at her best physically. She wasn't the only one, as in the match before, Grigor Dimitrov felt similarly, having to leave the court with two people helping him.
The high humidity made it challenging for players to compete, which is also why Raducanu felt the way she felt, as she explained after the match, as per TennisOne.
The British player was asked why she called for the doctor, admitting that she felt "dizzy" and "faint." On top of that, players played really long rallies, which didn't help her at all.
"I just felt really dizzy. I felt faint. It was very humid out there and we had a long wait, so maybe it was just an accumulation. [There were] just physical points as well, with long rallies and heavy conditions. I don’t know how I kind of regrouped in that second set but, in the third, I definitely struggled a little bit."
Although Raducanu lost in the quarter-finals of the tournament, it was certainly a positive result for her. She will return to the Top 50 on the WTA Tour, rising up to the World No. 48 position.
Up next, Raducanu will start preparing for the clay-court part of the season. She is scheduled to compete at the WTA 250 tournament in Rouen, which starts on April 14th.
After that, the 2021 US Open champion will play at the Madrid Open. The good news for her is that thanks to the points earned in Miami, she now won't need to rely on the wild cards to enter tournaments.
