Taylor Fritz shared the brutal side of being a tennis player after his disappointing loss at the 2025 United Cup.
Fritz once again chose the United Cup to start his new season. He has competed at the event every single time since it was established, and he didn't want to change that approach this year.
His first match at this year's edition of the event, however, wasn't as successful as he would have wanted it to be, even though it looked like he was cruising to an easy win.
After Gauff won the opening singles match against Leylah Fernandez, Fritz could have ended the tie with a win against Felix Auger-Aliassime, who he beat in both of their previous meetings, including the one at the ATP Cup in 2022.
This time, he was the better player on the court as well, but only until the end of the second set. Fritz was leading 6-4 and 5-3, seemingly controlling the match.
He had not faced a single break point up until that point, but he shockingly lost the one-break advantage and the second set. After that, Fritz also lost the third set and the match 6-4, 5-7, 3-6.
It was a disappointing loss for the American player, but luckily, he still secured the win in the tie against Canada with a mixed doubles win alongside Gauff.
However, his singles loss was immediately brought to his attention by angry bettors, who started attacking him via private messages on Instagram. The 27-year-old American shared those messages on X (formerly Twitter) with a caption that hinted that he saw the funny side of it.
"New season of tennis has officially started. We’re so back."
The comments were not nice, with people calling Fritz different names, such as "clown," "idiot," and "scumbag." Some took it even further, wishing the American player death.
Those comments show an ongoing problem in the world of tennis, and even though many players can see the funny side of it as Fritz did with his post, the fact that he soon removed it further highlights the scale of the issue.
Of course, Fritz was aware that he could have won the match in two sets, and during the press conference after the victorious mixed doubles match, he was able to assess his performance much more constructively than those in his messages.
According to the American player, it was very close to being a straightforward win, but he also praised Auger-Aliassime for his great serving.
"Yeah, I have thoughts on the third. I think the game that I got broken in the third was an extremely poor game that I played. Outside of that, like, he served great. I think the only situation where I'd kind of like accept it a bit more is if I let him get me in two breakers. That would be fair because he was serving great."
"Yeah, I'm not going to overthink it too much. It's one of those matches I'm two points away from winning the match, 30-All on my serve serving for it. Missed a serve by probably a millimeter that would have been an ace."
"At that point he hits a backhand line winner, first one he hit in the match. I can have a lot of thoughts about the third and the rest of the match. Super small margins from that being a straightforward win."
