Daniil Medvedev's behavior on the court generated attention again after he reacted angrily to being given a time violation by the umpire during his 2025 Rotterdam Open match against Stan Wawrinka.

The 2021 US Open champion only played two matches at the 2025 Australian Open but could not contain his emotions in either contest. He smashed a net camera during his opening-round victory against Kasidit Samrej.

Medvedev followed that by receiving a point penalty for throwing his racket during his second-round defeat to Learner Tien before not attending the post-match press conference afterward. Those actions across both matches led to him getting a massive fine.

That significant financial cost did not stop Medvedev from becoming enraged again in Rotterdam. The match against Wawrinka was his first since the Australian Open, meaning this was the third consecutive match involving an incident.

The umpire, Adel Nour, gave Medvedev a time violation in the opening set while he served at 5-5. The former ATP world No. 1 could not believe it, as he thought the explanation for his going over the 25-second time limit was obvious.

After comfortably holding serve, Medvedev slammed the umpire. He said the ball girl did not give him the ball despite his asking, and the umpire needed to open his eyes and stop being so bad.

"Why did you give me a time violation? Do you have some problem? She didn't give me the ball, the ball girl. Do you see? Open your eyes. You don’t have eyes, man. You’re so bad."

Medvedev said the umpire had also been poor in a match involving Karen Khachanov. The 28-year-old was probably referring to an incorrect overrule Nour made in a match between Khachanov and Dan Evans at the 2020 European Open.

In addition to mentioning Khachanov, Medvedev claimed that the umpires were rubbish in every match and that Nour specifically had some deep-rooted problems that were making him act the way he does.

"I remember with Karen Khachanov. I remember you don’t have eyes. You have a problem. You guys are absolute rubbish every match. I was calm, but you’re searching for trouble man. You have some actual deep problems."
"I didn’t talk to you. I don’t say anything. And then you act like this… You have some problems man. Open your eyes. Open your brain. I know you’re just sitting there, but think a little more. Come on, give me energy.”

Medvedev's finishing by asking the umpire for energy might indicate that he was looking for an argument and became frustrated when he did not get one from Nour, who remained silent and ignored him.

However, although Medvedev's anger was expressed unpleasantly, he had a point about the time violation. The ball girl did not give him the ball when he asked, and the six-time major finalist is usually quick between the points.

Medvedev may also have been letting some stress out after splitting with Gilles Simon before the Rotterdam Open began. His outburst at the umpire and losing the first set did not stop him from beating Wawrinka 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.
