The 2025 Transylvania Open, the fifth edition of the tournament, began on Monday in Cluj-Napoca. Participants in Romania are competing for prize money and ranking point rewards.

Karolina Pliskova won last year's tournament in Cluj-Napoca, overcoming home favorite Ana Bogdan in the final. It was the two-time Grand Slam runner-up's first title in four years, and it clearly meant a lot to her.

Simona Halep is arguably Romania's greatest tennis player ever, but she has never won her home tournament. The 2019 Wimbledon champion came closest to achieving that in the first iteration in 2021, losing to Anett Kontaveit in straight sets.

Romania's tennis hero returns to the tournament after accepting a wild card into the main draw. She will face Lucia Bronzetti on Tuesday evening on Centre Court in front of what is expected to be a packed court.

Halep has made millions in prize money throughout her career, meaning the prize money awarded at WTA 250 tournaments is unlikely to be her primary concern. However, any ranking points that can be won are crucial to the current world No. 870.

The 2025 Transylvania Open will be awarded $36,300 and 250 ranking points. Anastasia Potapova and Olga Danilovic are the top two seeds in Cluj-Napoca and will probably fancy their chances of reaching the tournament.

Jasmine Paolini is another high-profile former runner-up at the event. She lost in 2022 to Anna Blinkova in the Italian's second WTA final. Paolini is now ranked No. 4 and is a two-time Grand Slam runner-up.

The player that replicates Halep and Paolini's achievements from previous editions of the Transylvania Open will receive $21,484 and 163 points for that impressive effort.

Jaqueline Cristian and Harriet Dart were last year's losing semifinalists in Cluj-Napoca. Cristian had a dramatic battle against her compatriot Bogdan but ultimately lost 4-6 in the third set after making unforced errors in crucial moments.

The defeated semifinalists at the 2025 Transylvania Open will receive decent rewards for winning three main draw matches. They will have $11,970 added to their bank accounts and get 98 ranking points.

Although the prizes are less impressive for players who lose in the quarterfinals, the ranking points could still be crucial to several players. That is especially true for Halep, although it feels strange that is the case for the former world No. 1.

Players who reach at least the quarterfinal are guaranteed 54 ranking points and $6,815. Those points would make a difference for several players in the 2025 Transylvania Open draw.

The women who lose in the round of 16 in Cluj-Napoca will accumulate 30 ranking points and $4,160. Caroline Dolehide and Anhelina Kalinina were among the players who won on the event's opening day.

One ranking point is awarded to those who lose in the opening round of WTA 250 events. $2,975 will be given to those players for being good enough to be in the main draw of the Transylvania Open.

WTA 250 tournaments sometimes get overshadowed, but the presence of Halep and other good players in Cluj-Napoca means that is unlikely to happen at the Transylvania Open.
