It seems that
Coco Gauff just can't get back to winning ways as she recorded yet another disappointing loss, this time at the 2025
Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
Since reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals, the young American has been struggling. In fact, Gauff has been struggling so much that she has lost six of the last 11 matches that she has played.
That's a surprising mark for a player who has won the 2023 US Open, and at the end of the last season, she looked like the best player on the
WTA Tour. Gauff won the China Open in Beijing and the WTA Finals, and at the start of this season, she powered Team USA to the United Cup win.
Since losing at the Australian Open, however, the 21-year-old just doesn't seem to be able to start winning consecutive matches again.
She started with a win in Stuttgart, but that was against a player ranked outside of the Top 100.
In the quarter-finals, Gauff's opponent was
Jasmine Paolini, who is a player ranked just two spots behind her in the WTA Rankings, and the American started to struggle relatively quickly, even though it didn't look like it early on.
In fact, Gauff had a perfect start to the match. She broke her opponent's serve to love, and after six games played, the American enjoyed a 4-2 lead. On top of that, she led 30-0 on the Italian's serve, looking to increase her advantage.
But from that point, things went south for the 2023 US Open winner. Paolini was able to completely turn the first set around, coming back from 2-4 and 0-30 down to win the opening set of the match 6-4.
Gauff's confidence likely took a huge hit, and that was apparent at the start of the second set. Paolini was able to quickly break the serve of the American No. 2, but Gauff returned the favor quickly.
The two players continued breaking each other's serves, as fans in Stuttgart witnessed five consecutive breaks. But when Gauff had a break point to break back for the third consecutive time, she didn't use it, and that proved to be the decisive moment.
Paolini held her serve, and after doing that once more, the Italian player won the match 6-4, 6-3, setting up a semi-final meeting with Aryna Sabalenka. After the win, Paolini was happy about beating a top player like Gauff, but also calmed the expectations ahead of her match against Sabalenka.
"My goal is to have chances to win. Before I would lose [to top players] like 6-2, 6-1… well I don’t want to say that because maybe tomorrow Sabalenka will kill me."
