Coco Gauff spoke openly about how she felt after recording a very disappointing loss at the 2025 Miami Open.
Gauff hasn't made it past the quarter-final stage this year, apart from the United Cup. In fact, she lost five of the last nine matches that she played, meaning that in the last two months, she has lost more than she has won.
That isn't a stat that the 21-year-old player expected to have after absolutely dominating at the end of the last season and starting this season with a win at the United Cup.
In Indian Wells, the young American lost to Belinda Bencic in three sets. Her loss at the WTA 1000 event in Miami was even worse, as she lost in two sets to Magda Linette.
It was a disappointing loss for Gauff, especially because she didn't seem to be able to find her best tennis throughout the match. Linette is a player she managed to beat twice before, so in that sense, the loss was even more disappointing.
Speaking after the match, the 2023 US Open champion didn't really try hiding how she felt about it. Gauff admitted that she felt awful on the court, and that she has been struggling for a few weeks now.
"It wasn’t great. It hasn’t been the last few weeks. I’m trying to figure that out. Definitely not happy about it. Just one of those days when I felt awful in everything on the court."
Although the two WTA 1000 events on her home soil provided the American player with a great chance to improve her record, she will be one of the players who will be excited about the upcoming part of the season as well.
Tennis players will now get their socks dirty, as they will transition to the clay courts, a surface that suits Gauff's game, since she is a great mover.
The American player isn't signed up for her home WTA 500 tournament in Charleston, but she should appear at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
After that, like the rest of the Tour, Gauff should compete at the Madrid Open and the Italian Open in Rome. The clay-court part of the season will culminate with the French Open, where Gauff played the final in 2022.
