Carlos Alcaraz's split with coach
Juan Carlos Ferrero has generated plenty of reactions, and some think it was the right decision.
Alcaraz unexpectedly made the headlines shortly ahead of the 2026 season. He made the difficult decision to
part ways with coach Ferrero. This decision resulted from a disagreement during contract negotiations ahead of the new season,
according to reports from Spain.
Since the split became public, many have spoken about it. Some think it will hurt Alcaraz in Australia, some suggest the two might join forces again in the near future, while there are also those who think it was the right decision.
Rick Macci, former coach of Serena Williams, is one of those.
Macci thinks Alcaraz's decision to part ways with Ferrero was the right one, but not because he would be a better player without Ferrero in his corner, but because it was a decision that he made, even though some reports suggest his father might have been involved.
"Asked about the Alcaraz coaching change. He made the right decision because it was His decision. The past success was an amazing win/win. The player has to feel it to deal it. Carlos has his reasons to change the channel as he is the one with the remote control."
Macci also suggested that Alcaraz's decision might have come as a result of their disagreements about how the 22-year-old should approach the sport. Alcaraz famously has a Netflix documentary called "Carlos Alcaraz: My Way," in which the differences between him and his former coach are quite obvious.
"Many people are stunned by the Alcaraz coaching change. When you're number one and have been with someone for 7 years, and unplug the main guy, everybody should be jolted, but not a shock. He has two coaches and Carlos wants more freedom and overall say who he is going to pay."
After parting ways with Ferrero, Alcaraz might be in search of a new coach. His other coach, Samuel Lopez, will temporarily take over the role of the head coach, but the reports from Spain suggest that Lopez shouldn't become a permanent head coach.
Coaching such a prodigy is a tricky task, and coach Macci is one of those who know it. Alcaraz is probably the most creative player on the
ATP Tour and sometimes goes for shots that coaches wouldn't want to see him attempt. However, Macci thinks that's part of the job of coaching someone like Alcaraz, as he has an incredible repertoire of shots.
"Coaching someone like Carlos cuts both ways. You have to let him use his imagination, but cannot say it is low % if he misses. Fine line between courage and stupidity. The Spanish Magician genius has landed him in the pole position."
