Former WTA world No. 1 Angelique Kerber revealed some exciting news to her fans: she will become a mother for the second time.
Kerber retired at the 2024 Olympics after an excellent run to the quarterfinals in her final professional appearance. The German almost reached the semifinals but lost to the eventual gold medalist Qinwen Zheng in a final set tiebreak.
Her retirement came a few months after she returned to the WTA Tour. Kerber was away on maternity leave throughout the entire 2023 season, giving birth to a daughter during that year.
The three-time Grand Slam champion has now revealed she is pregnant again in an Instagram post, saying she was counting down the days until there is a new addition to her family.
"Counting down the days for someone special to arrive in our family ❤️🍼🐣."
The joyous news led to congratulations from numerous other current and former tennis players, including Belinda Bencic, who was on maternity leave for most of the 2023 season. She reacted to Kerber's post with a love heart and an emoji with two more hearts.
Bencic recently created headlines after winning the 2025 Abu Dhabi Open last week. Achieving this so soon after being on maternity leave was incredible, and received plaudits worldwide.
A few weeks before, the Swiss player had performed well at the 2025 Australian Open, reaching the fourth round. She took the opening set against Coco Gauff before the American ended her run by fighting back.
Caroline Wozniacki also reacted to the post with three love hearts. The 2018 Australian Open has two children with her husband, both born after she retired from the sport in the early stages of the 2020 season.
After being away for over three years, Wozniacki shocked tennis fans by returning to the WTA Tour. She has shown positive moments, including two runs to the fourth round of the US Open in 2023 and 2024.
There were concerns that Wozniacki might retire for a second time because she has not played since reaching the fourth at Flushing Meadows last year. However, the Dane clarified that she plans to return.
Former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic, one of the most popular players in the world during her prime, posted a heartfelt reply to Kerber's post sharing the happy news of her second pregnancy.
"So happy for you! 😍 Can’t wait for the arrival 👶🏼❤️."
Although players having kids and returning has become normalized, there are no indications that Kerber wants to do that for a second time. She is 37 and got to experience going out on a high during that excellent run at the Olympics.
Kerber won the 2016 Australian Open, 2016 US Open, and 2018 Wimbledon Championships during her outstanding career. That Wimbledon title was secured with Wim Fissette in her team, who now coaches Iga Swiatek.
Torben Beltz coached Kerber during her excellent 2016 season, which included winning a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Beltz later had a brief and less successful period with Emma Raducanu.
