Carlos Alcaraz revealed whether he was in contact with
Jannik Sinner during the Italian's three-month ban.
Alcaraz and Sinner are rivals, but at the same time, they have a very respectful relationship. However, the fact that they are very respectful to each other and sometimes have a quick chat at the venues doesn't mean that they are best friends in real life. In fact, the two are not really in contact.
They met recently on the tennis court, playing for a title at the
Italian Open. Alcaraz won that match, which also
helped him chase down Sinner in the latest edition of the
ATP Rankings.
After the match, the four-time Grand Slam champion was asked about his rival, who has one less Grand Slam title in his collection. Sinner previously said that not all of the people he expected to reach out during his suspension did that, and Alcaraz was asked whether he thought the Italian meant him as well.
The Spaniard admitted that he didn't call Sinner during the three months that the Italian was suspended, but not because he didn't want to, but because he was just busy taking care of his own tennis career.
"Well, I mean, that three months I can't feel him because I wasn't in that position. I mean, I can understand that he was surprised by some players who called him. I didn't call him. I didn't talk to him during those three months. But it wasn't about whether I agreed or not. I mean, I was playing. I was in my feelings, as well."
At the same time, Alcaraz understands the feelings of his rival. He knows Sinner was in a challenging position, and not having the support of the people he expected might have been disappointing for him.
"Honestly, I can understand him that he was surprised about some other players who didn't call him. It is in his rights to say it."
Alcaraz was further asked whether he thinks that Sinner was referencing him by saying that some people he expected to call him didn't. The Spaniard admitted that he didn't know who Sinner meant.
"I have to say that I don't know if he said that because of me or not. I don't know if he was thinking about me, he wasn't thinking about me. I don't know that."
"What I can say is I (indiscernible) him when he got injured, sometimes just giving him my good energy, just to have him back as soon as possible. It is about we're playing, fighting each other. In those three months, I can understand what he said. Honestly, I don't know if he was thinking about some players or others."
Alcaraz and Sinner won't meet on the courts again for a few more weeks. The only chance for their meeting in the upcoming weeks is in the final of the Roland Garros, as they will be the top two seeds at the clay-court Grand Slam.
