The
Brisbane International is one of the first two
ATP 250 events held at the start of the 2026 season, with the
entry list for this tournament featuring great names.
Apart from those who chose to start the 2026 season at the United Cup, a mixed-team event, there are two ATP 250 tournaments to choose from. One is the Hong Kong Open, and the other is the Brisbane International, running from January 5th to 11th at the Queensland Tennis Centre.
Over the years, many greats have lifted the trophy in Brisbane. Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Lleyton Hewitt, and Andy Roddick are all former champions of the men's event. In 2025,
Jiri Lehecka won the trophy, and he will be the defending champion in 2026.
The 2025 Brisbane International was a great event for Lehecka, as he also played the doubles final together with compatriot Jakub Mensik, but the duo ultimately lost to Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool.
In singles, however, Lehecka couldn't be stopped, and that was also because his final opponent,
Reilly Opelka, was forced to retire only after five games of the final were played. Both will return to Brisbane in 2026.
Apart from last year's finalists, there will be many players who will certainly attract the crowd in Brisbane. Undoubtedly, probably the biggest crowd magnet will be 19-year-old Brazilian prodigy
Joao Fonseca, who will make his debut at the event.
Australian fans know Fonseca well after seeing him
beat Andrey Rublev at the 2025 Australian Open. Now, the teenager will play in Brisbane as well, trying to prepare for the Happy Slam in Melbourne.
Fonseca will even be among the seeded players, but there will be a few more experienced players than him competing for the trophy. Former world No. 1,
Daniil Medvedev, will certainly be the biggest favorite to win.
The Russian player had an underwhelming 2025 season, but towards the end of the year, he found some form again and will be looking to return to the Top 10 in 2026.
The list of players who might be able to challenge for the trophy is long. The likes of
Denis Shapovalov,
Tommy Paul,
Frances Tiafoe, and
Cameron Norrie have experience with the biggest stages, and they will want to prove that in Brisbane.
Youngsters like Learner Tien and Alex Michelsen, but also
Breakthrough Player of the Year, Valentin Vacherot, will want to start the season on a high as well.
