The first
WTA 500 event of the 2026 season will be held at the
Brisbane International, with defending champion
Aryna Sabalenka returning to defend her title.
The first WTA 500 tournament of the new season will be held in Brisbane, and, as in the past couple of seasons, the field of players who will compete in Brisbane from January 4th to 11th is incredibly strong once again.
Sabalenka won the trophy in 2025 after defeating Polina Kudermetova in the final. The world No. 1 player signed up to play the event in 2026 as well, but she won't be the only former champion competing in Brisbane this year.
The 2024 champion,
Elena Rybakina, will play in Brisbane as well, but both players might be wary of a different name. The most successful player in the Brisbane International history will return to the Queensland Tennis Centre.
Karolina Pliskova won the trophy in Brisbane three times, beating everyone who stood in her way in 2017, 2019, and 2020. Conditions in Brisbane clearly suit her, and she will try to prove it again in 2026. The Czech player is returning to competitive action and used her
special ranking to enter the tournament.
Apart from the three former champions, the
entry list includes many players who will be able to challenge for the trophy, as the opening WTA 500 tournament of the season will traditionally welcome an incredibly strong field.
In fact, seven of the Top 10 players will compete in Brisbane.
Amanda Anisimova,
Jessica Pegula,
Madison Keys,
Mirra Andreeva, and
Ekaterina Alexandrova are all the other Top 10 players who will play in Brisbane.
Clara Tauson won the ASB Classic in Auckland in 2025, but she chose to compete in Brisbane instead in 2026. The only given wild card so far was awarded to 17-year-old Australian prodigy Emerson Jones.
The Brisbane International will celebrate its 15th anniversary, and tournament director Cameron Pearson was happy to mark the occasion by announcing a wheelchair event, which will join the WTA 500 and ATP 250 events in Brisbane.
"I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Brisbane International than with an incredible line-up of players and thrilling action on-court. Spectators will be treated to world-class tennis featuring some of the most exciting players from the WTA and ATP Tours, including our local stars."
"I’m also pleased to announce that this year’s tournament will feature the ITF 500 Australian Wheelchair International – featuring eight of the world’s best men’s wheelchair tennis players. We’ve witnessed some amazing tennis over the past 15 years, and the stage is set for another season of memorable showdowns."
