The entry list for the 2025 Transylvania Open in Cluj has been released, and home fans will certainly be happy about players attending.
The Transylvania Open, similarly to the simultaneously-running Abu Dhabi Open, is a relatively new event on the calendar, but thanks to the interest from home fans, it has a deserved spot.
In 2025, the WTA tournament in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, will be held from February 3rd to 9th, and once again, some of the best Romanian players will compete at the tournament.
The event, which is played at the BTarena, was first held in 2021. Back then, Anette Kontaveit won the trophy, beating Simona Halep in the final. Although a total of three Romanian players played in the final of the tournament over four editions that were held, none managed to win a trophy.
Anna Blinkova, Tamara Korpatsch, and Karolina Pliskova were the three champions after Kontaveit. In 2025, however, the tournament will be held without a defending champion, as Pliskova has yet to come back from an injury, which is why she will miss this tournament.
Still, the field will be relatively strong, even though there won't be any Top 30 players competing unless one of the players ranked inside of the Top 30 accepts a late wild card into the tournament. Those are usually given to home players, so unless there is some surprising withdrawal, that shouldn't be the case.
And it's one of the wild cards that will certainly make the home fans happy. Already in October 2024, it was announced that Simona Halep received a wild card for the 2025 Transylvania Open, and she should compete at the tournament.
But there is a slight doubt about her participation. The Romanian player was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open, and even though she named the Transylvania Open as her comeback event, injuries can be unpredictable.
Competing with her for the title will be some talented players who are waiting for a big breakthrough on the WTA Tour. Anastasia Potapova leads the field of these players.
Clara Tauson, Katerina Siniakova, and Peyton Stearns will all want to prove their qualities as well, and the event in Cluj will present them with a unique chance to do that.
One player who will be among the favorites to win, despite not being among the seeded players, is Alycia Parks. She is an incredible indoor hardcourt player, so conditions in Cluj should suit her game.
Home fans will be happy that Sorana Cirstea and Irina-Camelia Begu both appear on the entry list, with more Romanian players likely to join them as wild cards.
