The 2025 Hobart International will complete the pre-Australian Open series of warm-up tournaments, with the entry list for the WTA 250 event now available.
The Hobart International was first held in 1994, and with the 2021 and 2022 editions removed from the calendar because of the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2025, the tournament will celebrate its 30th anniversary.
It will be a special tournament, and as such, the organizers hoped to attract a special field of players, but with the Adelaide International held simultaneously, that was a challenging task, given the tournament in Adelaide is a WTA 500 event.
Still, plenty of talented players will compete in Hobart, and there will even be one former Grand Slam champion, Sloane Stephens, who was the last player before the ranking cut-off on the initial entry list.
In 2024, Emma Navarro won the title in Hobart, beating Elise Mertens in the final of the tournament. While the American player won't compete in Hobart in 2025, Mertens will once again make her way to the city, where she has competed almost every year since 2017, even winning the title in both 2017 and 2018.
Mertens is the only player in the history of the Hobart International who has won more than one title, and in 2025, she will try to expand her collection to three trophies.
Like always, a relatively competitive field will join her at the 2025 edition of the tournament, which will be held from January 6th to 11th at the Domain Tennis Centre in Hobart, Australia.
Dayana Yastremska and Amanda Anisimova are both talented players who were labeled as prodigies in their teenage years, and they will want to prove their qualities in Hobart.
Rebecca Sramkova had a sensational end to the 2024 season, which means she might even be among the seeded players in Hobart, joined by the likes of Magda Linette, Lulu Sun, and Elina Avanesyan.
There are nine Top 50 players that will make their way to Hobart, and even though the tournament organizers didn't manage to attract any Top 30 players, the Hobart International tournament director, Darren Sturgess, was very happy about the field that he presented.
"This summer, we’re in for an exciting tournament with nine top 50 players from nine different countries hitting Hobart this January and 10 players in the 2025 lineup having achieved career-high rankings in 2024.
"Once again, Hobart will be represented with an exciting crop of emerging talent who will be challenging the experienced players in our lineup. I can’t wait to see which future stars will emerge this summer."
