The 2025 Adelaide International will be the second WTA 500 event of the season, and the entry list has been released.
The tournament in Adelaide, running from January 6th to 11th, will also be the last WTA 500 event before the first Grand Slam of the season - the Australian Open.
Technically, it will be the third WTA 500 tournament of the season, as the United Cup officially counts as a WTA 500 event as well, but it's a completely different format of competition, and it only rewards points as a WTA 500 tournament.
Those who chose to compete in Adelaide will continue writing history at this unique tournament. Although it was founded only in 2020, the women's event already saw seven editions, as the tournament was held twice in 2022 and 2023.
That was because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the tournament from Brisbane was moved to Adelaide. Now, everything is back to normal, but the Adelaide International kept its place on the calendar.
In 2024, Jelena Ostapenko lifted the trophy in Adelaide, and the Latvian player will return also in 2025, but given how strong the field is, she might not even be among the seeded players.
Ons Jabeur, who is a former World No. 2 player, struggled with an injury throughout the 2024 season, which is why she ended it earlier to fully heal before 2025.
But as one of the most popular players on the WTA Tour, the Tunisian doesn't have to be worried about entries into tournaments, as she was handed a wild card for the 2025 Adelaide International, also expressing her delight to compete in the city.
"I am really happy to be back in Adelaide and be able to compete in front of Aussie fans over there. The last time I was there was really fun and I can’t wait to be back. See you soon."
Another former World No. 2 player, Paula Badosa, will also compete at the tournament. In 2024, she lost already in the opening round to Bernarda Pera, and she lost in the first round also in 2022.
In 2023, however, she reached the semi-finals before withdrawing from the tournament, even though that was at the second Adelaide International tournament held, so technically, not this one, even though she played on the same courts. She, too, is looking forward to coming to Adelaide again.
"I am looking forward to playing again at the Adelaide International. It is the perfect tournament leading into the Australian Open. The venue and the closeness to the city is something the players all love as well as being able to play in front of our Australian fans."
With two former World No. 2 players and a former champion, the field is already looking very strong, but there will also be plenty of Top 10 players that will participate.
Jasmine Paolini is one of them, as she will want to follow up on her sensational 2024 season. Jessica Pegula, Emma Navarro, and Daria Kasatkina are also featured on the entry list.
The field is headlined by one star after another, as there will be the last two Wimbledon champions competing. Barbora Krejcikova and Marketa Vondrousova both signed up to compete in Adelaide.
