The 2025 Austria Open Linz will be the first WTA 500 event held after the Australian Open, and the entry list reflects that.
While the WTA 500 tournaments, and even WTA 250 events, in the opening weeks of the new season have no problem attracting the top players, that can't be said for the tournaments held right after the first major of the season.
For example, the likes of Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina, who are the top players in the world, all competed during the opening week of the season, at some of the WTA 500 events, or their equivalents (United Cup).
On the other hand, the 2025 Austria Open in Linz, also called the Upper Austria Ladies Linz, which will run from January 27th until February 2nd, won't feature a single Top 20 player unless one of them accepts a wild card.
In 2024, Jelena Ostapenko lifted the trophy in Linz but surprisingly chose not to defend her title at the WTA 500 event, which was held as a WTA 500 tournament for the first time last year.
Instead, the entry list is led by Elina Svitolina and last year's finalist, Ekaterina Alexandrova, who should be among the seeded players in the draw for the 2025 Austria Open.
Belinda Bencic is attempting to find her best tennis after coming back after pregnancy, and she used her special ranking to enter this tournament. The "special ranking" assigns her a rank she had before pausing her tennis career.
Another player that will want to find the best tennis is Maria Sakkari. The Greek player has struggled with results in the past few months, which is why she dropped out of the Top 30. That, however, will still be enough for her to be among the seeded players in Linz.
Without any players that would be ranked inside of the Top 10 set to compete in Linz, the fight for the title could be very close, and players who know how it feels to lift the trophy in Linz might have an advantage over the rest of the field.
Specifically, there is only one such player. In 2023, Anastasia Potapova won the title at the Austria Open, and she will try to repeat that feat also in 2025. She, too, should be among the seeded players.
There will also be a Grand Slam champion in the field, as Marketa Vondrousova is set to compete in Linz if her health allows her to, as the Czech player has struggled a lot with injuries over the years and also recently.
The likes of Dayana Yastremska, Lulu Sun, Elina Avanesyan, Katerina Siniakova, and Rebecca Sramkova will certainly feel that they will have a chance for a big result in Linz, as they will be among the dark horses.
