There will be a new tournament on the
ATP Tour in 2025 called the Athens Open, and the
prize money and points on offer at the event have been made public.
There were tennis tournaments held in Athens in the past. Between 1986 and 1994, there was an ATP event held in the city, called the Athens Open in its first six years, then the Saab International in 1992, and the Athens International in the last two years of the event's existence. There was also a women's event held in the Greek capital between 1986 and 1990. The tournament was called the Athens Trophy.
The list of champions of the previous ATP event in Athens includes the likes of Sergi Bruguera and Alberto Berasategui, but a new champion will be crowned in the city this year. More than three decades later, top-level men's tennis will return to Athens at the event, which is officially called the Hellenic Championship.
The tournament will be held at the Telekom Center Athens, with
Novak Djokovic's brother, Djordje Djokovic, serving as the tournament director. The tournament relocated from Belgrade to Athens after
Djokovic changed his residence after some disagreements with the Serbian government.
Djokovic will, of course, compete at the event, but he won't be the only player attracting a huge crowd in Greece. Greek No. 1
Stefanos Tsitsipas, but also talented teenager
Joao Fonseca, should also play in the inaugural Hellenic Championship, which will be played from November 2nd to 8th.
In the tournament's first edition, players will compete for a total of €766,715. The newly crowned Athens Open champion will take the biggest cut of that prize pool, taking home €116,690 and 250 ATP ranking points.
The runner-up in Athens will receive €68,035 in prize money as well as 165 ranking points. Apart from Djokovic, who already qualified but might not be intending to play, none of the players competing at the Athens Open are in contention for a spot at the ATP Finals, so the points earned in the Greek capital won't directly impact someone's qualification chances.
Those who lose in the first round of the tournament won't receive any points. However, everyone is sure to leave Athens with €8,220 in prize money. Those who make it to the second round will feel slightly more rewarded, with 25 points and €13,455 as a prize for their first-round efforts.
Four losing quarter-finalists at the Athens Open will receive €23,170 and 50 ranking points, while those who will make it to the semi-finals will grow their bank accounts by €39,995 and their ATP rankings total by exactly 100 points.
Since this year's Hellenic Championship will be the first edition of the event, it will be closely followed, as the event might return to the city in the future.
