The 2025 Athens Open, scheduled from November 2nd to 8th, will be the tournament's first iteration, and its
entry list has been released.
Novak Djokovic's family holds the rights to an event during that week, which was held in Belgrade last year at the Novak Tennis Center. Serbia's greatest athlete did not compete at the 2024 iteration.
The event was moved to Athens from Belgrade. Although the official reason for this has not been given, multiple reports have suggested
tension between Djokovic and the Serbian government caused the development.
Djokovic relocating to Athens with his family provides further weight to that theory. While the tournament's move is terrific news for Greeks, many Serbians who idolize Djokovic have been left devastated.
The
ATP 250 event has been significantly boosted by Djokovic's place on the entry list. There had been uncertainty about whether the 38-year-old would want to play at a 250-level tournament at this late stage of his career.
Djokovic's residency in Athens and the tournament being a replacement for the Belgrade Open were likely pivotal in his decision to join the entry list. It will undoubtedly make a massive difference to the number of tickets sold.
Although this is great for Greek fans, it casts doubt on whether Djokovic will play at the 2025 ATP Finals, which begins immediately after the Athens Open, if the seven-time winner of the year-end championships qualifies.
Djokovic is currently No. 3 in the live race to Turin after Alexander Zverev, who thinks courts are
being made to suit Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, suffered a terrible loss to Arthur Rinderknech at the 2025 Shanghai Masters.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion might not want to play two tournaments in as many weeks, but he also thinks he is most likely to beat Sinner and Alcaraz in a best-of-three set format, which could convince him to participate in Turin.
Home hero
Stefanos Tsitsipas's name being on the entry list is another huge boost for the tournament's organizers. If he is fit, the two-time Grand Slam runner-up will try to find inspiration on home soil after a challenging season.
Tsitsipas withdrew from the Shanghai Masters with a leg injury. He is working to return for the 2025 Six Kings Slam, starting October 15th, and should be ready for the event on home soil in a few weeks.
Joao Fonseca's participation always brings excitement to events.
The Brazilian surprisingly skipped the Shanghai Masters to prepare for the indoor hard court season, which could help him at the Athens Open.
Jakub Mensik's form since his stunning title triumph at the 2025 Miami Open, where he defeated Djokovic in the final, has been mixed. The young Czech star has an opportunity to finish strongly in Athens, and his playing style should work well on indoor hard courts.
Karen Khachanov,
Jiri Lehecka,
Brandon Nakashima,
Alexei Popyrin, and
Roberto Bautista Agut are some of the other players on the Athens Open entry list. It should be an entertaining week filled with great tennis.
