The 2025 ASB Classic will conclude the series of tournaments held prior to the Australian Open, and the entry list for this ATP 250 event has already been released.
With the close proximity of Auckland, New Zealand, to Melbourne, Australia, where the Australian Open is held, the ASB Classic is often a popular destination for players at the start of the new season.
The tournament organizers managed to secure both men's and women's even, even though they don't run simultaneously. The women's edition of the ASB Classic is held in the week before the men's tournament, which runs from January 6th to 11th, 2025.
The ASB Classic is a tournament with a long history, dating back to the 1880s, and in recent years, it became an established tournament on the ATP Tour, with multiple high-profile winners, such as Juan Martin del Potro and David Ferrer, who won the tournament four times, tying Roy Emerson's record at the event.
In 2021 and 2022, the tournament was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it returned in 2023, with Richard Gasquet bringing his former level to the event to win it. In 2024, Alejandro Tabilo bested Taro Daniel to win the tournament, and he will be back in 2025 to defend his trophy.
Very likely, he won't be the top seed again, as Ben Shelton is set to return to the tournament. The American was one of the first players confirmed for the event.
He will participate already for the third time, having reached the round of 16 in 2023 and the semi-finals in 2024. Unfortunately for him, he was stopped by Taro Daniel in 2024, and will be hoping for the "third time the charm" to strike in 2025.
Argentinian players Sebastian Baez and Francisco Cerundolo might be clay-court specialists, but they will try their best on the hard courts in Auckland to secure some valuable ranking points at the start of the new season.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard proved to be one of the breakthrough players of the 2024 season. The 6'8" (203cm) tall Frenchman possesses an incredible serve, which he will hope will work on the courts in Auckland in 2025, as he will make his debut at the event.
There will be plenty of talented players competing in Auckland, such as Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Sonego and Alex Michelsen, but also veterans Cameron Norrie and Gael Monfils.
The tournament organizers are yet to distribute their wild cards, so the entry list can still become much stronger if some of the players competing in the first week of the new season choose to enrich their preparation by one more event.
