There is never a dull moment with Daniil Medvedev, especially at the US Open where his love-hate relationship with the crowd is well documented.
Saturday's late-night clash with Argentina's Sebastian Baez was expected to be a drama-free procession to the second week. But Medvedev was pushed by the in-form Baez who had won his last 12 matches in a row including his maiden hard-court title in Winston-Salem prior to the US Open.
Despite going a break down in the third set, Medvedev rescued the situation, recovering the break and then saving a set point on his serve. He then prevailed in the ensuing tiebreak, needing four match points to close out a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 win in just two and a half hours.
During the match, Medvedev was incensed by the crowd who murmued between his serves to try and get under his skin. At that point, the spectators inside Arthur Ashe Stadium were desperately craving a fourth set and cheered for the underdog Baez who briefly led in the third set.
Medvedev called for the chair umpire to quieten the noisy crowd and that only heightened the level of boos from the stands. And speaking after the match, Medvedev applauded the fans who treated the players with courtesy but not one hilarious fan. Medvedev joked how the overzealous fan might actually bother his wife for continually shouting into the night.
"Thanks so much to all the guys who don't shout between first and second serve. You guys are great, but a few, I think there is one guy. I don’t know if he has a girlfriend or wife, but I don’t know how the girlfriend or wife is going to sleep because I think he’s so pumped up that he’s going to tonight say, ‘Vamos! Vamos! Vamos! Vamos! Like non-stop. I feel sorry for him."
