Stefanos Tsitsipas had a quite unusual task to deal with during his second-round match at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters against Ben Shelton.
In his second-round match at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters, Tsitsipas had to deal with quite an unusual fan, as one of the spectators tried to distract him by imitating a bee shortly before he served.
As the Greek player prepared to serve during one of the service games, he suddenly started to wave with his racquet around him, leaving many fans wondering what is he trying to do. However, it soon became obvious that Tsitsipas fought there's a bee somewhere around him.
After a few quick moves with his racquet, Tsitsipas prepared to serve again, but once again, he could hear the bee, or at least what he thought was a bee. After the incident was repeated a few times, he finally figured it out, complaining to the umpire.
"There's a person imitating a bee behind me. Do you think that's okay?"
After a quick talk with the umpire, Tsitsipas returned to the place where he heard the voice, and investigated among the fans who was making the noise. Soon, he found out it was one of the ladies sitting in attendance and returned to the umpire.
"It has never happened in my career. I know they are supporting the other guy. It's the lady over there. I want her out. She needs to go. They are imitating a bee, they are buzzing like 'bzzzz'."
Despite an annoying fan, which supported his opponent, the Greek knew that Shelton had nothing to do with it, and he had only words of praise for the 20-year-old American after beating him 7-6(3), 7-6(2).
"He’s still relatively young and he has that free spirit in the way he approaches his game. It came down to two tiebreakers and I was very confident if I made a few returns back and got him to rally a bit, things might go my way, and it ended up so. I was tough, for sure. I was tough as nails, and that gave me the win today."
