Nick Kyrgios got into a heated argument with the chair umpire over the behavior of some fans during his first-round win at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships.
Kyrgios was pushed to his limits by home wild card Paul Jubb, who received the majority of fan support. Understandably, being a British player and an underdog, the player ranked outside the world's top 200 was always going to receive strong backing.
But it was at the expense of a furious Kyrgios, who felt disrespected by the fans that forced him to lose his cool. The Australian is known for his fiery temper on the court and was very vocal during the match.
Just a few minutes into the match, Kyrgios first confronted the line judge over a call and accused him of being a "snitch." During the match, things got very tense when the Austrian Open doubles champion showed his annoyance at the public, who were shouting just before his service games.
It's fair to say the behavior was unwarranted as it threw off Kyrgios multiple times, and he lost the fourth set. The upset was very much on the cards, but the 27-year-old counted on his experience to push him across the finish line, and he expressed his displeasure with the whole situation after the match.
“Today as soon as I won the match, I turned to him… I’ve been dealing with hate and negativity for a long time, so I don’t feel like I owed that person anything. Like, he literally came to the match to not even support anyone really, it was more just to stir up and disrespect. That’s fine.
