Daniil Medvedev confronted a fan who called him a "loser" after his loss to Nick Kyrgios in the second round of the 2022 Canadian Open in Montreal.
Medvedev faced a very difficult draw at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal. Despite being the top seed, he had to play against Kyrgios in the second round of the event. The Australian player reached the Wimbledon final only a few weeks ago and also won a title in Washington.
However, the Russian was also coming to Montreal in very good form. He arrived after winning a title in Los Cabos without losing a set. Still, his second-round opponent played even better and beat the ATP World No. 1 player, 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2.
It was a difficult loss for the Russian and some of the fans tried to make it even harder for him after the match. As Medvedev was leaving the court, he walked past some of the fans, and one of them shouted: "Loser!" at the Russian player.
Medvedev obviously didn't like that, and he confronted the fan immediately, as can be seen in the video below. It was a disrespectful moment, and Medvedev was right to call out the fan.
A few moments later, he already sat in the press conference room, and it was clear how disappointed he was by losing already in the second round of the tournament.
"For sure the next two, three days it’s not going to be easy coming back to practice knowing that everybody is still playing in Montreal, fighting for a thousand points, for a Masters winner title. It’s not easy. At the same time I had a lot of tough moments in my career. This is definitely not the toughest. I’m going to try to prepare well."
"I hope to play well in Cincinnati. I hope to play well in the US Open. When I say ‘well’, it’s to try to be the winner. But there are a lot of guys like Nick, Carlos (Alcaraz), who can win."
