In the final of the 2019 Wimbledon, Roger Federer experienced one of the most painful losses of his career to Novak Djokovic.
The Swiss Maestro was as close as he could get to winning his 21st Grand Slam title, but that never happened. After the match reached the fifth set, Roger Federer managed to get an 8-7 lead and also two match points on his serve.
But that was not enough for the 20-time Grand Slam champion to add another trophy to his collection and after not using another two break points later in the set, he eventually lost in the tie-break 3-7. During the press conference ahead of the 2022 Laver Cup, the two great champions also spoke about this match, when Djokovic was technically forced to mention it.
When asked about memorable matches against the Swiss Maestro, the 21-time Grand Slam champion replied: "Well, I'll pick my first Grand Slam finals, US Open 2007. I lost that match," Djokovic said as he got interrupted by Federer, who joked: "He's being nice now (laughter). Thank you, Novak," Federer said.
But the Serbian quickly reacted and said: "I haven't finished," Djokovic replied with a laugh adding: "2019, sorry, Roger, finals of Wimbledon." Federer, who obviously knew what was coming, responded: "What happened? I've blocked it out," Roger Federer answered with a laugh as both seemed to be in a good mood ahead of the event.
