Alexander Zverev admitted he didn't play "pretty tennis" but was ecstatic to secure his berth in the semifinal of the 2022 Italian Open.
Zverev was playing one of the most talented clay-court players in men's tennis, but Garin's poor run of form coming to Rome filled the former champion with hope that the match would be a comfortable one.
But it was far from it, especially in the first set, which Zverev won 7-5 by playing some gutsy tennis at times. In the second set, the German went through the gears to find his best level and cruised 6-2.
After the match, Zverev spoke of his delight at reaching a second straight semifinal on clay. He was runner-up in Madrid this past week, but he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.
"It was a high-level match. At times it wasn’t pretty tennis, but I got the job done and that is the most important thing, I am through to the semi-finals and I am happy about that."— Zverev, while speaking during his post-match press conference
The 25-year-old also acknowledged the great level displayed by Chile's Garin, who, despite a run of one win in five matches, appears to have turned a corner this week, reaching his second quarterfinal of the season.
"Very good. I think he'll be quite happy with how he played this tournament. I think the last few weeks have been quite difficult for him results-wise. But I think he can definitely be happy about how he's playing here."
Up next for Zverev is Stefanos Tsitsipas, and while the German did not know who his opponent would be by the time he finished the match, he did underline that either Sinner or Tsitsipas would be a tough opponent. They met last week in the Madrid semifinal, with the German winning in three sets.
