Felix Auger-Aliassime has said that he believes he is playing better than he was last year, as he revealed when speaking to press following his opening round win over Italian Lorenzo Sonego at the Rotterdam Open.

The Canadian third seed saved both of the break points he faced as he once again displayed his formidable indoor hard court prowess.

Of course I was hoping to win and get through, but 6-2, 6-3 is a great performance against a player that is tricky like he is, or competitive like he is. He always fights and he always hangs in matches, so for me to win without dropping my serve and in this fashion, it’s a great way to start the week.
- Auger Aliassime talks positively to press about the year ahead
Last year was an amazing year, but this year is a different one. I think I’m a better player overall. Of course the best thing I can do compared to last year is win again, so hopefully I can do that. The draw is really strong, but I’m confident if I can keep playing the way I did today I’ll get my chances and then we’ll see.

The Montreal native has now set up a second-round clash with Frenchman Gregoire Barrere, who is currently in a rich vein of form following an impressive run at the Open Sud de France last week.

Auger-Aliassime is the defending champion in Rotterdam, and he arrives back at the site of his first ever ATP title, just one year on from claiming his maiden crown.

Now with four under his belt, and another year of experience and growth on tour, the young Canadian believes he can defend his first ATP trophy in conditions that suit his game perfectly.

It is a loaded field this year, but the defending champion has to remain one of the firm favourites for the title.
