Danill Medvedev's approach to interviews and the media has been praised by former world number one Jim Courier, who feels the Russian is just being himself.

Daniil Medvedev and Jim Courier first crossed paths during an interview at the 2022 Australian Open. After defeating home player Nick Kyrgios, Medvedev was interviewed by Courier on the court, but loud boos were heard during the post-match media interaction.

However, the Russian was visibly annoyed at the reception and addressed the crowd, first saying he couldn't even hear Courier over the boos. Medvedev went on to ask the crowd to show some respect for the former US player and later stated that he was extremely disappointed with the reaction.

Not every player addresses the crowd during such moments and Courier outlined his praise for how the Russian player handled the situation. It was not the first time Medvedev has had run-ins with supporters and Courier said, when speaking to Eurosport, that he likes the way the former US Open handles backlash from hostile fans.

"Those post-match moments with the players, where they can showcase who they are, when the mask drops for a second, are so vital for the sport. And not everyone wants to be loved by everyone. Medvedev is perfectly fine if people don’t like him."

Medvedev comes across as honest and sincere when speaking to the media and doesn't seem afraid to give his opinion. Whether it's about his own form or the issues surrounding the 2022 Wimbledon and the ban on Russian and Belarusian players, the former world number one is often forthcoming with a response.

Courier believes such traits set Medvedev apart from other players, who are perhaps more equipped to deal with media more democratically. The former US player said he loves such an approach as it's genuine and refreshing in modern tennis.

"But I kind of love it about him because he’s just authentic, he’s not polished, not media trained. He’s just going to let you know what he’s thinking and there’s something magical about that."
