Former number one Jim Courier believes that there is something magical about Daniil Medvedev because the Russian is just so authentic.
Daniil Medvedev and Jim Courier had an interesting moment in January at the Australian Open when Medvedev defeated Kyrgios. The Russian was booed by the Australian crowd and he fired back by asking them to show respect to Courier who won there. He's also had some frosty interactions with the US Open crowd as well and Courier thinks those moments are vital for the sport of tennis.
Those post-match moments with the players, where they can showcase who they are, when the mask drops for a second, are so vital for the sport. And not everyone wants to be loved by everyone. Medvedev is perfectly fine if people don’t like him.
The Russian is a very good interview to be fair as he usually gives long responses and actually thinks about what he's saying. It's more than just the generic comments most players give. He is very politically correct but that's because he keeps himself out of anyone's business which is fair enough. As Courier said, he is simply authentic.
But I kind of love it about him because he’s just authentic, he’s not polished, not media trained. He’s just going to let you know what he’s thinking and there’s something magical about that.
