Andrey Rublev hasn't been playing that well since his disqualification from the 2024 Dubai Championships, and he admitted it might have impacted him.
The ATP 500 tournament in Dubai ended in disaster for Rublev, who was defaulted from his match against Alexander Bublik. He shouted in a line umpire's face, which was excessive, and he was defaulted as a result.
He would get his points and money back after the disqualification, but its impact on him wouldn't be seen until weeks later. Rublev's Sunshine Double experience wasn't very good.
He lost early in Indian Wells and didn't do much better in Miami. He talked about both exits ahead of the Monte-Carlo Masters, admitting that the Dubai fiasco might have impacted him more than he'd like to admit.
"In Indian Wells I was so focused on trying to control my movements that I was completely stuck. I had no more energy, I didn’t have the strength. And in Miami, I exploded. I could no longer control myself, my actions, my nerves. I felt like I was paralyzed, I couldn’t move. And in Miami, I exploded. I could no longer control myself, my actions, my nerves. I felt like I was paralyzed, I couldn’t move."
Returning to Monaco is a nice experience for Rublev, who won the tournament last year. He is the defending champion, and he hopes to have a similarly great run again, forgetting what happened in Dubai a few weeks ago.
"It’s a pleasure to come back here. It’s always a pleasure to come and play on this magnificent course. Of course, I have great memories. Even before I won I had a lot of them and I’m always very happy to come back."
"During the year I sometimes think about my victory, especially when I watch videos on social media. It makes me feel like I’m there. But since I arrived, I try not to think about it too much and stay focused on my performance."
