Rafael Nadal has opened up about his consistent injury issues during a recent interview.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion has been plagued by injuries for over a year, only playing three ATP matches since last year's Australian Open, mostly due to a hip injury that kept him out for a long time.
Many in the tennis world have expressed their disappointment at the Spaniard's absence. For instance, Djokovic said Nadal being missing made him sad and that his presence was very important for tennis.
Former British No. 1 Laura Robson is another person to express similar sentiments. Robson hopes Nadal gets the send-off that he deserves after the monumental amount he has contributed to the sport for many years.
Nadal has now elaborated further on his injury problems this season in an interview he did at the Copa Del Rey final, where the Mallorca-born Nadal was appearing to watch RCD Mallorca play. He started by discussing how difficult it has been for him.
"My body won't let me. It's getting difficult for me. It's been a difficult year and a half, I'm trying every day. I have things to solve, and the reality is that at the moment I'm not being able to put myself in a position to compete. It's hard."
The 37-year-old then said he was not ruling out his chances of appearing in Barcelona or Madrid, but there is a good chance he will not be able to due to his physical issues.
"I don't rule out anything, not even being in Barcelona or Madrid, but at the moment, I am not being able to get there due to physical problems."
Nadal ended by confirming that he has had abdominal problems since making his attempted comeback at the ATP event in Brisbane back in January.
"Many people have mental problems, and I also have them when in my work I can't manage to fight for my goals, but, no, it's physical, I have abdominal problems since I returned from Australia. We are trying things. We are going day by day."
