Stefanos Tsitsipas experienced another loss, this time at the 2023 Halle Open to an inspired Nicolas Jarry.
Less than a week ago, the Greek witnessed Richard Gasquet's 600th win in Stuttgart. He quickly forgot it when he moved to Halle, winning his first-round match against Gregoire Barrere in three sets. But in the second round, Tsitsipas wasn't so successful.
The 24-year-old played against Nicolas Jarry, who has a game that suits the grass court well. The two met twice on the ATP Tour before, and the Chilean managed to win the match that was played on the grass court in 's-Hertogenbosch four years ago.
Tsitsipas entered the tournament without his former coach Mark Philippoussis, but since the two split he hasn't been really successful. In the first set, the second seed had five break points, but he couldn't use his chances and the set had to be decided in a tie-break.
Both players had their chances in the tie-break, with Tsitsipas being the first player who had a set point. But Jarry saved it and created his chance, ultimately winning the tie-break 9-7.
The second set was much more one sided that the first one as Tsitsipas struggled on his serve. Jarry had a total of five break points and even though he didn't use his first four chances, he converted the fifth one, establishing a one-break lead.
He then finished the match on his serve, winning it to love to record one of the biggest wins in his career, beating Tsitsipas 7-6(7), 7-5 to advance to the 2023 Halle Open quarterfinals. Up next, he will meet either the ninth-seeded Alexander Zverev or Denis Shapovalov.
On the other hand, Tsitsipas will now turn his focus to the 2023 Mallorca Championships where he received a wild card along with Felix Auger-Aliassime and Feliciano Lopez, who will end his professional tennis career at the event.
