Andy Murray won't play doubles at the 2023 Queen's Club Championships, pulling out on the day of his match due to fatigue.
Murray played a lot of tennis in the previous two weeks, winning back-to-back ATP Challenger trophies. He triumphed in Surbiton and then took a train up to Nottingham to play tennis there as well.
It proved a good decision as he won that event as well, but ultimately a defeat to Alex de Minaur in Queen's prevented him from becoming a seed at Wimbledon.
The whole point of playing so many matches was in order to become a seed, but ultimately, he will be short by a few spots. The loss to de Minaur wasn't a good one as he was beaten easily by the Australian, though Murray refrained from overreacting to it.
He's still confident about his chances at the Slam, believing himself to be one of the best grass players right now.
Murray was also supposed to play doubles with Cameron Norrie, who came up with the idea. The plan was hatched as Murray wasn't sure how many matches in singles he would get so leading up to Wimbledon so any additional match in the doubles would have been beneficial.
"Yeah, I mean, that was something that was discussed, yeah, a few weeks ago about playing, and obviously didn't know exactly which tournaments I was going to be playing or how I'd perform in those events. So, yeah, that was why I decided to play doubles here."
He got plenty of matches in singles, and after losing to de Minaur easily, the Brit concluded that it was not worth it. There was no benefit for him to play additional doubles as he won't play doubles at Wimbledon either. He played enough matches, now it's time to recover and prepare for the upcoming Grand Slam.
