Stan Wawrinka hinted at retirement after his first-round match at the 2022 US Open. He didn't finish it after losing the first two sets to Corentin Moutet.
Wawrinka is a three-time Grand Slam champion and misses only the Wimbledon title in his collection of major titles. The 37-year-old player triumphed at the Australian Open in 2014, at the Roland Garros in 2015, and at the US Open in 2016.
However, this year, the three-time Grand Slam champion lost already in the first round of the New York Slam. His opponent was Corentin Moutet, who won the first two sets 6-4, 7-6(7). Wawrinka retired after the second set of the match.
The Swiss player spoke about his career and hinted at a possible retirement that might be nearing after the match. Wawrinka is one of the oldest players on the ATP Tour, and he feels it not only on the tennis court but also when it comes to recovery.
"I'm getting closer to the end, that's for sure. I was injured for more than a year and it took me a while to feel much better physically and tennis-wise. I still love the game and want to compete a bit longer before stopping. For me as much as I enjoy what I doing I want to keep going."
The Swiss player said that if he wants to continue competing, he needs to start winning matches. He certainly has the level to win, and he feels it, even though his results don't prove it at the moment.
"I will need to have some results too. Because you can't just keep being on Tour and losing. But I see that I'm playing and feeling better even though I'm not winning yet. I will be back winning matches soon. I know that I'm closer to the end, that's for sure. It's reality."
